The Firm

Since its inception, our firm has been home to some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s leading trial lawyers. Proudly, Bishop, Barry, Drath still ranks among the Bay Area’s leading law firms.

Our firm dates back to 1918, when founding partner Dan Hadsell, who was preeminent in the field of water resource law, served as lead counsel in many of the landmark water use cases of the day. He was joined by Joe Sweet and Everett Ingalls as named partners. In the ensuing decades, Sweet became prominent in medical malpractice and Ingalls made his name as an authority on insurance law.

Under the leadership of Nelson Barry and Richard Bishop, our firm continued turning out outstanding trial lawyers. By mid-century we represented the interests of some of the largest property and casualty insurance carriers in the world.

Today, Bishop, Barry, Drath not only represents clients in the court room but also provides counsel to individuals and major corporations in business, commercial, transactional, real estate, trusts and estates and construction matters as well.

Bishop, Barry, Drath has a sophisticated general practice with special emphasis on trial work.

Members of our firm have played major roles in many complex, high stakes lawsuits tried in California in the last decade. Included were battles over defective products, medical negligence, insurance coverage for asbestos injuries, hazardous waste sites and environmental pollution.

Our attorneys have tried to conclusion hundreds of jury trials requiring thousands of hours in detailed, behind-the-scenes preparation for each winning result.

We count individuals, small businesses and major corporations as our clients. Each depends on our business common sense to anticipate and avoid costly battles by resolving disputes.

Some members of our firm concentrate on representing the needs of the Bay Area’s diverse business community. They assist in the formation of large and small corporations, participate in contract negotiations and drafting as well as perform other commercial transaction services. We have also participated in most aspects of financing, lease, purchase and sale of real estate.

In all of our work we demonstrate a personal concern for our clients’ needs. We provide direct and straightforward advice as we treat each case or transaction as important whether it’s a multi-million dollar acquisition or a personal injury arbitration.

Our firm offers a wide range of legal services to a diverse clientele. To focus experience and to develop a collegial atmosphere we are organized into practice groups, each chaired by a shareholder. The groups meet on a regular basis in order to keep up with legal developments and specific cases. Each group develops and encourages attendance in programs for continuing education for its members. Most of our firm’s attorneys practice with several groups, relative to their variety of interests and needs.
